To those who became parents on JET: when did you inform your coworkers?

2nd going on to my 3rd and final year JET in 2023 and husband and I are expecting a baby due in July. I already let the vice principal know (so he can become prepared with maternity leave paperwork and crap like that) and the BOE via my CIR knows as well.

Those who became parents during their time on JET, when did you inform everyone else like JTEs and other staff you talk to? I’m a woman so I’ll be the one showing lol. It’s still early, so nothing yet.

I know there’s no right or wrong answer, but rather curious to see.

Happy Wednesday! Few more days of desk warming to go! I took off starting the 26th until the 9th so only 2 more days for me lol

  1. I’m no longer a JET, but working as a teacher in Japan and the woman having the baby in this case as well. My vice principal asked me if it was ok to announce that I would be leaving X date to the teachers during the teacher’s meeting due to my pregnancy. He did so around month 4/5 (after the first trimester). I had started to tell some of my coworker JTEs before that announcement because I wasn’t sure if I would be feeling too ill to work and call off suddenly So I needed them to understand why I would suddenly be absent or leave early during the work day.All the JTEs I told were respectful enough to not tell others (as far as I’m aware), so really would depend on you. A lot of people seem to wait until the first trimester is finished, but if you’re going to be feeling ill, it might be good to give your JTEs a head up. They also made accommodations for me so it worked in my favor to tell them. Congratulations!!
