Weird exclamation mark with Google Keyboard

Hi there! So this is one of those questions you can’t really google cause there aren’t a lot of answers and you just kind of forget about it but let’s hope someone here knows what I’m talking about.

So you all know what the exclamation mark in Japanese looks like, right?

Like:
頑張って!
(The exclamation mark takes up a whole space)

Well, when I type in my phone (I use the Google Keyboard), this is how it looks:
頑張って!

It’s like a western kind of exclamation mark! It’s dumb and simple but it drives me crazy! Have you experienced something similar?

And bonus question: would this exclamation mark look strange to a Japanese person?

Thank you 🙂

  1. Double space characters are confusing

Using the standard Google IME in Android, when writing in Japanese mode, my keyboard spits out a double space exclamation/question marks. Single character exclamation marks are not strange for Japanese people, they already know all the double/single space BS.

  2. Aren’t you getting choices for exclamation marks once you hit the button? I get full-width, half-width, cartoonish, etc.

  3. You’re overthinking this. How much space it takes depends on what characters you’re using: full-width or half-width and no japanese will think an exclamation mark is strange, they even have a name for it 感嘆符 (かんたんふ)

  4. Using GBoard too.
If you use the period to type punctuation on the JP qwerty board (long press period 。) it will give you half width punctuation characters.

What I saw to get the full width punctuation is to enable the ‘long press for symbols’ setting then you have the punctuations paired with the letters (N is paired with ! )

That options is found in settings > preferences > long press for symbols or in JP 設定 > 設定 > 長押しで記号表示

I use the 12key flick tho so that’s another way lol
