Could you give an example sentence or show a photo?
It’s sometimes easy to forget that katakana is used basically as a form of italics, not just for foreign words or emphasis. In many cases, アル is basically the same as an italicised “is”, for example, “there _is_ a ninja standing there. (But you can’t see him)”
