Rentig a mini-truck with regular AT license for deliveries.

Is it possible to rent/self-drive a mini-truck on a regular AT Japanese driving license? I am trying to figure out deliveries for a few things I am selling and wondering if I can do it myself. Also, I assume there must be several rules concering securing the load on truck if anybody has any ideas or references.

  1. Do you mean a Kei truck by a “mini truck”? Yes, you can. Most people use a van though so they don’t have to bother with securing things.

  2. Rental places usually check your license to ensure you are allowed to drive what they are giving you. Assuming your normal license limits you to 小型 vehicles, as long as the truck isn’t a 中型 or 大型, you are OK.

I think a truck rated for less than 5 tons gross weight would be allowed on a normal license. I doubt you’d make the mistake of inadvertently renting a 中型 truck. They are almost the size of a bus.

For securing, there are little hooks around the bed of the truck you can use to wrap rope/whatever around, also helps to throw a blue sheet on top of that before wrapping it.

  4. jimoty has guys who have kei (and other) trucks who’ll come and pick up, carry, and deliver whatever for quite reasonable fees.

When we had to move a fridge and some mattresses within our city, it was cheaper to have someone come in their kei truck and do it for us than it would have been for us to even rent a truck
