Converting California license

Like the title suggests I just need to know if any specific documents are required for the conversion. I already have an appointment set for next month, along with translations of my California license and other documents. But I recall seeing that I should have proof of some sort. I was back in the states for little over 3 months to renew my license and my passport proves that with the stamps. I was thinking to request my drivers history from the dmv but haven’t done so yet. I also have old licenses, old passports, etc is that enough?

  1. The only proof I can recall is that you were actually in the country for 3 months when you got your license

  2. I think that I had a problem because the US doesn’t give you a re-entry stamp. Luckily, I just made the three month mark, so I didn’t bother with additional documentation.

You should be able to find everything online. The only bit I didn’t know about before going in, three months is the minimum. If you can’t show that you’ve had your license for a year in the US, you’ll need to slap a new driver sticker on your car for the first year in Japan.

  3. Should be good, at least 5 yrs ago I was in a similar situation. They took time to check your passport however to prove the 3 months stay period.

  4. I’m not sure if it’s true, but I’ve heard that showing your most recently expired CA driver’s license is enough if you don’t have any other proof that you were in CA for at least 3 months. Good luck!
