Ghosts in Japan

Ghosts or supernatural occurances are part of every countries’ legends and culture. Japan has its own urban legends about ghosts and other creatures.

But is it true that ghosts in Japan are way more volatile than other ghosts from different countries? Been reading experiences and watching videos of people residing in Japan that ghosts are aggressive and can actually cause physical harm even to non seers?

Is also true that ghost apparitions there can happen even during daytime? We’ve grown up knowing that ghosts and other supernatural phenomenon often happen at night, wee hours to be exact. But they say that in Japan, ghosts can appear and bother people even during daytime.

Thanks for your time!

  1. I’d say the vast majority don’t believe in ghosts. But there are unfortunately people who scare their kids with ghosts. My daughter picked this fear from another kid at daycare and now she closes doors saying obake. The fridge made noise, she screamed and ran saying obake.

I told her even if they exist they’re cute. She is 3 .

  2. Lol do ghosts in other countries do no harm? Just hanging around? Why would people be afraid of them then?

Just kidding, they are not real and can’t hurt you.

  3. In Japanese folklore, ghosts are often seen as benevolent or even helpful. In many tales, ghosts help people resolve their problems or seek revenge against enemies. I think in western countries, ghosts are more so portrayed as malevolent and frightening.

Yurei or Bakemono are believed to be active at all times of the day and night. There is no specific time of day or night when a ghost is more likely to appear.

In fact, some Japanese ghost stories and legends specifically mention sightings or encounters with spirits that occur during the day. For example, the story of “Kuchisake-Onna” (the slit-mouthed woman) is a well-known ghost story in Japan that tells of a female ghost with a disfigured face who appears to people both during the day and at night.

If it’s true or not is up to your own belief though of course 😉

  4. All you need to know about ghosts in Japan can be learned from ゲゲゲの鬼太郎

Don’t blame me if you can’t get the song out of your head for months.

  5. I’m not sure, but I wonder if it’s because Japanese horror movies are different from American horror movies in that they are more spiritually awe-inspiring than startling, and the ghosts have personalities in their stories.
I think it is related to folklore.
