Vocabulary app?

I have been taking online classes for a good part of a year now. My teacher and I have found that if I have the vocabulary in front of me I can fit it together to make a sentence perfectly, but without a vocabulary reference sheet I am clueless what simple words mean. Does anyone know of an app that will read to me chosen vocabulary then read the translation to me after – kinda flashcard style? Preferrably without me having to interact with the app because I want to listen to it while I work.

  1. I know there are youtube videos out there that do this. You could maybe rip the audio and do that?

The one downside is you can’t curate the list yourself.

  2. Oto Navi app has vocabulary sections for Genki where they do that. The downside being it’s limited to Genki vocab, and I don’t think you can set up playlists so you need to navigate chapter by chapter. But it’s there.

Not directly answering your question, but I’ve been testing our Renshuu for listening practice and I kind of like it so far. They have listening style reviews (if you subscribe) and it’s been pretty helpful I think. Things like listen to a word and either do multi-choice or writing, or listen to a sentence and answer it by drag+drop or writing. It might help strengthen the skill you’re describing of hearing a word then knowing what it means, although it’s not a passive thing.
