Shipping to USA

My time here is coming to an end. Gas anyone recently shipped their belongings back to the states? I don’t have anything grand, mostly clothes andnithe belongings.

How was the experience?
Who did you use?
How long did it take?

  1. Haven’t done it, but I’ve been planning it in case of an emergency. Last time I checked, Yamato Tanshin was charging about 700,000 yen to ship ALL of my stuff overseas, and even that may have been an overestimate.

  2. Surface mail via Japan Post is great for replaceable things you won’t need right away. I did know a woman who surface mailed her high school yearbook, and the box was lost, so make sure the really precious stuff is in one of your suitcases.

Check with your airline about extra baggage fees.

And of course, pare things down. It may be much cheaper to buy another frying pan for your new home than ship an old one.
