What is the acceptable etiquettes for calling out a lie in Mercari?

I’m in the market for computer components and there are crazy number of people who feign ownership or ignorance to the thing being outright broken.

So I am asking for benchmarks to be provided (for those that are unfamiliar, a stress test program that proves the CPU/GPU can run at advertised capacity for a period of time).

Suspicious seller T reluctantly does a bench and oh no! the computer shuts down after 2 mins of benchmarking. Claims afterwards that he used it for 2 weeks and the previous owner used it for a year.

Claims that he must’ve mishandled it when putting it into the PC to benchmark and that it was working just fine until yesterday. The heck kind of excuse is that. It was broken and you tried to sell it, you’re getting called out lol.

Am I allowed to get pissy and be like “well, you obviously refrained from posting benchmark pics in your initial post because you knew something was wrong”?

Not particularly trying to be a vigilante in this. I just don’t think this is the sort of thing I leave a “thank you” comment for and go my merry way. After all, I did request the benchmark.

  1. I would forget it. Because they can just delete your comment and block you. I’ve called out shady sellers before and they just delete and block. Seen the same with others, too.

  2. Don’t waste your time and energy, you’re not going to get them to suddenly have a change of heart.

  3. If he knew something was wrong surely he wouldn’t have indulged you and done any benchmarks at all? And then told you about the problem? He would just delete your comments and block you.

There could be many reasons why something crashes. I overlocked a brand new CPU and had to downclock it somewhat before it could run certain benchmarks without crashing. That doesn’t mean it’s broken.

I sold an Xbox One on Mercari that I’d bought brand new and used for a brief period with zero problems but then left to gather dust for a while. After I sold it the guy comes and says that it’s randomly shutting down. I apologised and said that I’d never seen that happen, which was true. Then it seemed that the problem went away and he was happy.

Just because something goes wrong with an item doesn’t mean someone is trying to scam you. Chill out.

  4. Yeah, thanks for all your comments. I got them to label it as junk. I can move on.

I’m just so sick and tired of these sellers. They know that one day a less fortunate and underresearched soul will buy it off of them thinking they got a bargain.

Also think its silly that the seller can censor comments at will so future buyers won’t see what goes down.

  5. Can’t speak to Mercari, but had a similar experience on Yahoo Auctions with a guy selling knock off Tudor watches.

Feigned ignorance and kept stating that the watches were not fake, but quickly gave a refund then deleted their account and re-listed them under a new one a few weeks later.

  6. You had the time to write this article just to understand how to claim your rights? Always do this: how would I solve this back home? Easy

  7. This guy was selling counterfeit earphones and someone else was asking to buy it but I swooped in and told them they were fake and not to waste their time. They thanked me but I was blocked from the seller’s page lol.

  8. I’ve bought and sold loads of computer parts on PayPal flea market but not so much on Mercari. Over the years I’ve realised that Japanese are in general honest but there are always exceptions. If you haven’t actually bought the item then just move on and avoid that seller in the future.

  9. There is a Flag button on every post. You can share you grievances there. Since posting a benchmark is just for assurance you may likely get ignored.

  10. Have you try この商品を事務局に報告する and leave a comment you suspect the seller not being honest with product’s actual condition.

  11. dunno what you’re looking for but I’ve got some extra PC parts I’m trying to find a home for. I’m on Mercari but no one seems interested.

  12. What are you looking for? I have 2 3060ti I need to put on mercari by the end of the week, doing the cleaning/benchmarking probably tonight (30min furmark, timespy, no, I wont do the shitty ff14 bench)

TBH most people I saw selling/buying pc parts on mercari are either truely clueless, or knowingly doing shady stuff. No inbetween.

Had one guy who bought a 3070 from me starting to accuse me of sending him a broken GPU since it wasn’t working. Offered to troubleshot with him, since I knew it was fine. Turns out he only put one of the 8pin cable thinking it was enough, AND was plugging the hdmi cable into the motherboard instead of the GPU.

I would not buy pc parts from people who will not give a lot of details, or will sell as “Working no problem but selling as junk”. That’s codeword for broken but now it’s not my problem.

Also, you have a LOT of reseller, and those people usually don’t even test the parts, they just buy and relist and send as is.

  13. Personally, I just try to avoid sellers that look like they’re going to be a hassle, which can include:

    1. People with super long profiles with a massive list of made-up “rules”. I remember one person had a rule like “you have to comment first so that I can check your profile and decide if I want to sell to you” lol. Sorry that’s not how Mercari works. The only time I’ve indulged bullshit “rules” is commenting on a “専用” listing that I will buy the item in question in, say, the next 3 hours so if the 専用 person doesn’t buy it. That way I can gauge the seller’s response. If they get all uppety about it then they might cancel the transaction so I’ll steer clear (don’t need the hassle).
    2. People whose stories just don’t add up. For example, I saw someone selling a GPU, and the listing said basically “I’m a beginner so I don’t know any technical details and can’t run any tests, don’t ask me” – yet their entire account was just selling PC parts. Unlikely to be “just a beginner”.
    3. People who won’t give straight answers to simple questions
    4. People who say they cannot ship the item for X days because of XYZ reason (just delist it until you can send it then..)

Of course I can be flexible on the above if the price is compelling.

My experience with Mercari has been mostly fine. I remember I got a GPU dirt cheap because one of the fan blades broke off. It was totally fine once I just removed the entire shroud and (in addition re-applying thermal paste) replaced it with some small case fans attached using tie-wraps.
