Any recommended resources for grammar/vocab similar to Wanikani?

As someone with ADHD, Wanikani makes me very motivated to every day, multiple times a day, do my japanese study because of the structure it provides (I’m disorganized) paired with the dopamine of leveling up all the kanji and vocab, as I love gamifying things. Just looking at my progress bars makes me happy. I also find most of their mnemonics very useful. I’m aware of its flaws, but for me, it’s the best resource I could have hoped for for learning kanji.

I was wondering if anyone knows other resources for grammar and vocab that would be useful in my situation. I don’t mind if it’s paid if it is worth it.

  1. I’m studying mostly with just SRS tools, here are a couple besides Wanikani:

    – **Bunpro**:

A grammar app. Can be a bit overwhelming but I think if you take it slowly (1-2 points a day) it can help a lot

    – **Jalup**:

An old service that recently got (semi-)abandoned, but the content is still accessible and it’s one of the best resources I found. It’s a collection of high quality Anki decks that teach you in a i+1 method, new grammar points and new vocab. It also has an android app, and was adopted in a new iOS App called Nihongo Lessons.

One amazing thing about the apps is that all the cards are linked with each other, so for each new sentence, you can click on old words to navigate to their old meanings. And starting after 1000 cards, the definitions become in japanese.

One disadvantage about the service, beside that it was semiabandoned, is that it has a high entry cost ($300-350 for all the content, 7000+ cards). It doesn’t have a subscription, and the creator was criticised for it, and it could be one of the reasons he couldn’t maintain it anymore. But I’m currently around card 1300 and it’s really a great way to learn japanese using just SRS. You can also try the first 100 cards for free and see if you like it.

    – **Anki**:

Good old Anki. At some point I feel like Anki is very important and it’s a very flexible and strong tool that can help you with a lot. Currently I’m still studying the Tango N4 deck, after finishing the Tango N5 one.

One thing that I learned and worked better for me, is doing sentence decks mostly. But there are a lot of decks that you can try and see what works best for you. If Jalup is too expensive for you, I’d highly suggest the Tango decks, as they also try to be i+1 (and i+1 is the best way to learn any language)

Sadly this one doesn’t have a mobile app and is still relatively new, but it’s a great free tool that everyone here can probably recommend.

  2. I bought copies of Genki (textbooks) and have been using those along with Bunpro (I just select the grammar points as I cover them in the book) so I can have the reviews to study with. It has been working great for me.

  3. Kitsun.io is similar for vocab and has decks for Genki and 10K all with audio. Similar to using Anki but making you type the answers in.
