PSA – Japan Post Bank service suspension ATMs

Got an email from Japan Post Bank saying that services will be suspended Tuesday, May 2, 2023 23:55 – Saturday, May 6, 2023 7:00, including ATM services.

Figured this might catch some people out. Make sure you’ve got your cash on hand if it affects you. Japan’s banking services (and the JPB ATMs that don’t operate at night) really blow my mind….

  1. I remember 20 years ago my supervisor telling me I had to withdraw before GW and New Year’s holiday at a regional bank.

  2. ahh so Golden Week is all well and good for you, but you want the little ATM people to have to work too?!!

  3. Yep. This was the nail in the coffin for my continued use of JP Bank. Once I get my auto-payments moved to another bank, JP will sit permanently empty and idle.

  4. I think Conbini ATMs should still work….. if you don’t mind paying the transaction fee.

  5. Thanks for the reminder.

I have a JP Bank ATM here that stops working at 5pm and has the weekends off.

Bugger started frantically beeping and spat my card out mid transaction, that’s how I found out it had working hours like a regular salaryman, which defeats the whole purpose of being an ATM in the first place.

  6. Ahh just like the good old days…good memories of the way banking here used to be for those of us who have been stuck here a while.

  7. So will it only affect Japan Post Bank clients ?? Or is every ATM going to be shut down ??

  8. Well this is good to know! The exact and only days I’m traveling for Golden Week.

  9. As we all know, the little gremlins inside all Japanese ATMs are overworked and underpaid.

Imagine only getting New Years off? People are quick to scoff, but please think of the poor ATM Kappas.

  10. Today I learned that “ATM” stands for “Automated Teller Machine”. You know, as in a **machine** that can operate **automatically** without the need of a break or holiday for you to do bank stuff.

  11. I got a notice from a Family Mart ATM that I won’t be able to access money during that time at all if I understand correctly.

Grabbing a handful of cash before then and then camping in my room because traveling during Golden Week is silly if you don’t have family in Japan.

  12. A change from last year when everyone shat upon people saying “be sure to withdraw before Golden Week!” ;P

To be fair, it’s even gotten a lot better in the years that I’ve been here.
