Yes but I think you need to do it more than a month before your previous end date. Unless you are already 1+ year then it’s 2 weeks I believe.
Also it helps if you are looking for childcare but have been rejected and need an extension Of paternity leave. But also keep in mind it is a business and there will be a back and forth.
My usually advise in hindsight is always try to stay on the good side of HR before any life changing events marriage, kids, etc. most of the time at least in non black companies in Japan they will help you with compensation s your coworkers may not know about.
