I’m still not sure if I even got an interview but it is always good to prep ahead of time.
I have heard that for the language portion of the CIR interview they have you read a newspaper article that is usually from the Asahi Shinbun.
There are a lot of categories on their website though so I was wondering where I should focus on reading from?

Anything to do with politics, business, education, health.
The topic can be literally anything so the most important thing is to just read everyday to build your general vocabulary. I really recommend reading news articles like you said but also recommend using https://learnnatively.com

Am a CIR from 2021 batch
The article I was asked to read was very simple, probably around N3 level.
It was about the process of dyeing kimono and linked into sustainablility/recycling!
