Hello… quick question.

I’m moving to Japan soon (student/musician) and had a question about grocery shopping (weird I know but hear me out). So I’m from America, and I’ve grown up in small towns and rural areas were everyone has a car that you can load up with groceries. Usually you buy enough groceries for two weeks or per month depending on when you get paid (weekly, biweekly, monthly). I’ve never lived in a big city before and I won’t have a car for at least a few months. So how dose grocery shopping work? Can you only do it a little at a time with multiple trips?or is there an easy delivery system in place (like instacart in America). How do you grocery shop? Obviously living in a big city id assume you would be only walking distance. From were you can grocery shop, but even then carrying 30 something bags 15 in each hand isn’t ideal. Thanks you.

Depends on how you want to do it. You can stop by a smaller grocery store that are everywhere every day on your way from school, or you can do it a few times a week, or if you want to do it once a week you can do so as well.

Yes online grocery stores are easy to use if you can read Japanese and have a debit/credit card. I usually use aeon net super.

  3. Between my station and my home (10 minute walk) there are four separate grocery stores.

I’ll usually buy enough groceries for the next two or three meals. So I’ll buy a small bag or two of groceries pretty much every day.

There are a number of grocery delivery options as well. Two of the four stores near me have their own apps and in-house delivery services but the wife prefers to use co-op delivery. https://www.coopdeli.jp/

  4. I have a bicycle with cargo bags that I can load up with ~1 week worth of food. I often go twice a week. Many Japanese go every day or 3-4 times a week. Moving to a new country, you’ll have to get used to some new ways of living. As a student, you won’t have a refrigerator big enough for more than a week’s worth of food anyway. In the summer a lot of fresh food will spoil very quickly if left out, too.
