Who do you use for .JP domain registration? Trying to escape Onamae and their terrible pricing…

I own five .jp domains for current and future businesses, all are currently registered through onamae dot com. They’ve recently added a 20% “service charge” to their renewals which I do not wish to pay. Along with their constant upselling, they really remind me of the godaddy.

So, I’m looking for somewhere to move to.

star-domain looks better, at least on the surface. No weird service charges and less aggressive upselling.

Poking around a bit, xserver domain (aka xdomain) looks pretty good. They do not seem to be ICANN accredited but they are listed as a JPRS registrar, and since I only want to use them for .jp domains, ICANN isn’t that important to me. They offer 1yen incoming transfers for up to 5 domains, which is nice.

Anyone have experience or recommendations? Or registrars to avoid?

  1. I don’t know how much your current one is now, but google domains lists .jp as 40 per year. I have not had much trouble with registrars but site hosting is another story.

  2. I have no suggestion. I just want to commiserate about Onamae. It is literal dogshit. The interface is terrible. It feels straight out of 1997.

I never thought I would yearn for GoDaddy.

  3. I use stardomain/ netowl. Been working well for me for the last 5+ years

Ditto on Onamae being trash, hated using that company.

I think 101domains does jp too, but they’re pretty bad with their website/ interface

  4. I only buy .jp domains for extremely specific purposes, but when I do Ive found that godaddy is by far my favorite. Might be more expensive, but Im more than willing to shell out for a comparatively very streamlined product and responsive customer service.

  5. I’ve used Hover dot com for everything I use. Nice interface, seems to do everything I need.

  6. I’ve used gandi.net for all my domains for the past 20+ years. Their motto is “no bullshit” and they live by it.
