My coworker is coming back from over a month of recovering from a emergency surgery she had. What’s an appropriate gift to give her to welcome her back to the office?
How about take her to a coffee shop and have a chat?
Say welcome back. Why does she need a gift for returning to work? Don’t perpetuate this gift giving nonsense.

I’ve not worked in Japan yet, but I think if you’re not close enough to know what to offer, I’d chose food.
If you saw your coworker with some snacks at work, buy him a box of good snacks from the kind he likes, maybe a small cake for the returning day.
Life is always better with food. Especially when you have to come back to work 😁
Go to the gift store in a local station or shopping center. Pretty much anything in there. A small box of senbei or something like that would be fine.
Whatever you do, don’t wink…
Are you also a woman? Woman to woman gift-giving is a lot more forgiving than if you were a man haha. If you’re a man I’d suggest nothing, just say welcome back.
But yeah (if you’re a woman) I also think food is a good way to go. Giving a gift wrapped little hand towel or a nice hand cream is also very common (between women) 🙂
If you give a gift she might feel like she needs to give you a return gift – a vicious cycle!
Just welcome them back. Also tell them if they have anything they need to catch up on, that you can help. That’s the polite thing to do.
Seems like Japanese people give towels for every random occasion.

No gift in this situation. Kind words are enough.
Don’t just give her a gift by yourself. Collect money from all your coworkers, even those that don’t know her well, to buy a useless present and give that to her.
Your coworkers won’t be able to refuse because they’d be labeled as jerks, and you’ll take all the credit.
That’s what someone in my previous job used to do, worked really well.
