For people who work in central Tokyo, how far out do you live?
My new company has offered a transport allowance of up to 5000円 per day which sounds crazy to me.
It seems like train trips to even Saitama is only 1000円 or so (based on Google maps only. I don’t know for sure).
Does anyone actually use the total amount of their travel allowance?

I’ve known people who commuted via Shinkansen from Shizuoka or Nagano.
I commute 2hours each way from the yokosuka area to central Tokyo everyday.
Even that only comes out to 2200¥ a day without a 定期券.
It will simply depend on the company, your personal circumstances, and your work arrangement. Many, many people travel from the neighboring prefectures to Tokyo for work, with commutes ranging from 2-3 hours. I’ve commuted from Kansai/Shikoku to Tokyo on a daily/weekly basis as well.
If you use the shinkansen to commute between Omiya to Tokyo or Shin Yokohama to Tokyo that could add up to 5000 a day.
Balance of money vs time
Recently moved to Japan, needed to stay with relatives while starting my job/finding a place, nearly 2 hour commute both ways, but doesn’t set me back more than 2200 yen a day in total.
About to move into a place that will turn 4 hours round trip by train into 20 minutes by walking, and man will that be an upgrade.
I know of one person commuting from Kobe to Chiba, and another driving from Tokyo to Tochigi.
I spend ten minutes on the train. Thirty minutes door to door, if that. Keep meaning to cycle. Personally, I love living in Tokyo. It is a waste of my travel allowance, though!
