Anyone has experience selling high value items in Mercari?

I’m thinking of selling an item in mercari and it’s quite expensive so I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with this?

Mainly want to know if there’s been horror stories of the buyers keeping the items and not paying or something similar.

  1. The way mercari works is that the buyers pay first, then the money is held until the seller rates you (or some time has passed). Just document everything, the package, shipping and so forth and it will be fine.

  2. sold 3 items worth more than 50000¥ each, filmed everything before sending in the package. Glad I never had to use it.

  3. It’s impossible to keep item without paying on mercari, and most scammers are just dumb “I will buy your item right now for 20% or your price”.

  4. Sold a laptop and several old phones there without issue. Use the merukari bin shipping, since that comes with built in tracking and insurance, that way nobody can claim that the item wasn’t sent or received.
Be truthful and detailed in your listing to avoid trouble.

  5. I’ve sold quite a few expensive things, mainly accessories, shoes and bags though.

One that sticks out, I was selling a handbag for ¥350,000. The lady wanted me to split it into two separate listings because she wanted to use two different cards. I was wary and usually would just say no, but she seemed legit so I did it and it was all fine 🙂

The money stays in the middle with Mercari until both parties have confirmed they’re happy with the sale, so no problems there 🙂 I use rakuraku mercari shipping which hides both addresses, and get Yamato to come pick it up from my door. It’s a bit expensive but vvvvv easy.

I once had a guy complain about a ¥30,000 coat. I refused to cancel/refund it because I thought it was BS, so Mercari just let him keep the coat for free and paid me the money in the end. Mercari protects the seller pretty well in my experience!

  6. I’ve used it. It can be a huge pain to get it setup properly.
There’s the desktop site which I prefer for browsing. You’ll have to download the mobile app if you want to sell though since there’s a security process to go through.
If your Android play store is based outside of Japan, then you’ll have to download an apk to sideload it. Don’t know how to make it work on ios.
If your Japanese is poor it’ll be a struggle as well as the app is Japanese only.
    GL.

  7. I’ve found and seen on Mercari to really downplay your item’s condition.
It sounds weird, because you’re obviously trying to sell stuff.
    But you’ll avoid headaches later!

Have plenty of photos (use all the maximum allowed photos)

Even if it’s super nice 2nd hand item – make sure to mention that there *might* be some unseen scratches, fading, blemishes and that please understand it’s stored at home and you’re not a professional and please don’t buy if you’re nervous etc.

Basically imagine you’re selling to the most neurotic, picky, high maintenance customer ever – and go from there.

  8. If the item is truely expensive, I would recommend yahoo auctions. The fee is lower and if the item has high demand you will likely get more in the end.

Mercari is better (generally speaking) for items where the value is pretty much known, or bargain hunters.

I’ve bought and sold items valued around 200,000-250,000 perhaps a bit more (can’t remember) on mercari and never an issue. It’s actually the cheaper items I’ve only had trouble with.

  9. I once sold my mining rig which cost around 25man on Mercari, nothing bad happened and the transaction was finalized pretty much after Yamato changed the status to delivered.

Point is, you should take picture of the product pre-packaging and afterwards as well just in case buyer claims that product is not as advertised/dead on arrival.

Mercari will hold the fund temporarily to prevent exactly what you worried about, so as long as you backup evidences of the item, send the item to the correct address and monitor its delivery time/place, everything else should be fine.

    Hope it helps!

  10. Sold a few things like skis and PC equipment on Yahoo Auction but I think the same anecdotal stories can be applied to both.

Skis were 9万円 and some PC equipment between 5-6万円 each. PC parts were used but because they are in a case they were unblemished and easy to sell. Skis have a little bit more damage and expressing that with pictures was important.

No horror stories at all. Maybe a few questions that felt a little odd-ball about usage, storage, etc but completely reasonable when looking back on it. I could follow the package en route.
