Keeping new address confidential from previous company (during job change)

Hello everyone, I’m not sure how to handle my current problem at hand so I could use some advice.

I’m currently working as a Software dev for a company ‘A’ in Fukuoka. I accepted a job offer from a new company ‘B’, in the same city.

I’ve already scouted and applied for a new apartment in the same area and currently undergoing screening procedures with the guarantor company, owner, etc.

During my discussion about resignation procedures with the board members (in A), I was asked to share my new address with HR. The reason they mentioned was something related to the tax department, as in they would send a document to my new address after joining B (I wish I full understood the technical terms related to taxes).

I don’t want to share my new address with anyone in A for personal reasons. What are my options here?

I suggested to them if I could submit my new address to the tax dept. directly instead of via the HR, but they are not interested in going that route. They’re insisting that I share my new address with them.

I’m considering approaching lawyers for legal counselling, but before that, it would be great if anyone could help here, and also provide some insight into the document they mentioned

  1. Set up mail forwarding then tell them to send to your old address?

Was also uncomfortable giving an old company my new one at the time but couldn’t find a solution because I was new to Japan back then.

  2. Tell them to send to your old address, and set up forwarding at the post office from the old one to the new one. It works I think for about a year.

I believe you have your reasons for not wanting to share your address with old company so I won’t ask.

  3. Since you’ll still be in the same city, tell them you’ll come and pick up whatever document it is. Fini.
