Most Foreigner Friendly + Easy to Use WiFi?

Moving into my first place in Ikebukuro later this week. Trying to be proactive, I’ve been trying to get WiFi set up beforehand.

To no avail, most of the companies have required something I don’t have (namely a Japanese issued CC).

I can speak Japanese pretty well, but can’t read Kanji well enough to read a contract. The representatives I’ve talked to at Biglobe and Softbank I believe are trying their best to serve me, but each time I get into discussions it’s either a month+ long wait to get someone in to set up, or some other document or other they need.

Ideally would like fiberoptic, and I know my place has the port. But most importantly, want to get it set up soon so I don’t have to go WiFi less at the place any longer than I have to.

Would love some advice as I muddle through this – I thought this was going to be a quick thing, but has quickly become quite the quagmire.

  2. I didn’t need a Japanese credit card. I used US credit card for years with no problems at two different internet companies.

Regarding set up time, it took me a couple of weeks for my apartment and about a month for my house.

  3. I’m afraid the set-up time wait is not unusual. Usually 2-4 weeks. I went with So-net hikari fiber (Sony NURO) and it’s been super fast and rock-solid.

I rented a pocket wifi from ivideo ([https://www.ivideo.com.tw/wifi/japan](https://www.ivideo.com.tw/wifi/japan)) for a month while waiting.

Ikebukuro is a cool, fun & very convenient area to live.

  4. Check out Assist Solutions. They have full English support and offer gigabit fibre through NTT, in my case. They were really friendly and helpful, accept a foreign credit card for monthly payments, and were able to get me set up in a week. You pay a little bit more for the convenience of English support, but honestly in my case it was worth it.
