SINGLE AFFIDAVIT FOR MARRIAGE form question

Hey team,

I have been filling out this form https://japan2.usembassy.gov/pdfs/wwwf7114.pdf and at the bottom I need to get it notarized. The line specifically is “Consul of the United States of America duly commissioned and qualified”. I checked online for Tokyo Embassy appointments and the next appointment is over a month out.

We were really hoping to get married ASAP because otherwise my fiance will need to pay 20万 yen for annual insurance.. we are trying to get her put on as a dependent for me due to my work’s insurance. This needs to be done before May 1st I believe.

I was wondering if anyone knows if I can just get it notarized elsewhere other than the US Embassy in Tokyo? Ideally something in the next day or two.

Thanks!

  1. Next day is virtually impossible at the Tokyo Embassy. I had to wait 3 months to get a slot for my affidavit and just getting there and back cost me about 4万円. Took a whole day off from work just to get a piece of paper stamped that was finished in 15 minutes.

I looked into getting a lawyer to do power of attorney but it didn’t seem possible. Embassy was the sure-fire way to have everything go without a hitch.

  2. You might get lucky and catch a spot if there is a cancellation. Just keep checking if you’re in a hurry.

  3. Check frequently for appointments, people cancel all the time. If you are in a hurry, you can also email them and they may book you an earlier appointment. Both of these have worked for me before.

  4. I got mine done at the Osaka US Consulate. I was able to get an appointment about a week out, but of course it depends. It was a very easy process and the whole thing took about 15 mins. Getting to/from there was the annoying part.

  5. If you are willing to fly out to other US Embassy’s like the one in Sapporo. You might be able to get an appointment but May 1st is real soon and idk if there will be many openings.
