U.S. Contract Work?

Hello! So. I’m moving to Japan as an ALT in a few weeks. The company I work for now has offered to let me continue my copywriting position but as a contractor instead of a full-time employee. Is this possible?

Thanks!!

  1. You’ll need permission from immigration to engage in activities outside the scope of your visa (I’m assuming you’re getting instructor and not specialist in humanities).

Otherwise should be fine, just don’t forget to file your taxes accordingly. Remember, since you’re physically in Japan doing the work you owe Japan taxes for income derived from that work regardless of where your employer is located or where the money they give you goes.

  2. Depends on what type of visa. Humanities specialist? Maybe. Your employer might not like you working on the side though. Instructor? Nope.
