Golden week Shinkansen horror

Hi. My family is visiting me this golden week. They got their JR passes and booked the seats. But how does that work for me? Can I board the same train as they do, cause we’d like the travel together. If’s fine if I have to stand. I want to know if I can take the same train or not.
Thanks.

  1. You’d have to go to a booking counter and book 3 seats. When it comes time to pay, just show them the JR passes and pay for your own portion.

  2. Horror is a bit of an exaggeration. However it will likely be very crowded and I would expect to stand if you want the exact same train as them.

  3. For many lines (not North of Tokyo) you can all just get on the unreserved cars together

  4. If you already know their exact train and seats you can easily buy your ticket right next to them assuming it’s still available. They went on sale 1 month before so you are late, but if you can find enough seats together they can change theirs and you buy yours. Use the ticket machine at the station. It’s easy, and in English too

You can’t stand around in a reserved seat car.

You can book a seat adjacent to theirs if it’s not taken yet.

  6. You can also stand in the between areas of the car on reserved trains. Even on the Tohoku Shinkansen. Found that out the hard way during New Year’s travel.
