Good Morning. I came across a poem sung to shingen song performed in a Kenbu performance called Yojo.
It is based on a Chinese poem about duty and revenge. The poem relates the tale of a devoted follower chasing his mark. His mark is on horseback and of superior social standing. As this means he could not kill his mark, the mark contemptuously throws down his coat/jacket basically implying “You can’t kill me, you can kill my coat though!” In frustration the follower cuts the coat which to his astonishment bleeds. The rest of the performance I interpreted to be “will the coat be enough for my master to satisfy revenge?” and if not seppuku would be the solution.
