I finished Genki 1 & 2. What book should I go to next?

I’ve heard that Genki two gets you to n4 so I was thinking of buying N3 Kanzen Master, but I’ve heard that Tobira is better for N3. In your experience which one is better?

  1. I went to Tobira shortly after Genki 2. Some people note their being a difficulty gap but I didn’t notice that, personally. There’s a handful of N4 grammar points that aren’t covered by Genki that I learn in the wild but Tobira is perfectly comprehensible after Genki 2.

If you like the structure/materials of Genki then I’d say you’d be okay with Tobira, as it is a comprehensive textbook in the exact same way. From what I’ve seen Kanzen Master probably isn’t going to be as comprehensive (in terms of reading, listening, culture, etc.) and is perhaps a better reference tool. I think many people will often have both, especially if they study for JLPT.

  2. Kanzen and Soumatome are review books. They don’t provide enough practice.

    Quartet 1 or Tobira

  3. I did some of Tobira but looking at Quartet, I might prefer that.

Quartet is supposedly more similar to Genki. So if you like Genki you might like it.

N3 Kanzen Master is kind of always a good supplement. The vocab one you can buy whenever you want, but you might wanna do the grammar and reading one after some of quartet/tobira.

  4. Quartet if following immediately after genki II.

    Same company and intended consumers.

Alongside youtube grammar reviews for each chapter.

Tokini Andy has a series on the Grammer.

Supplement with quartet flash card decks. There are free ones already.

You’re also at a point where you should be consuming more reading and listening. Podcasts and shows without English subtitles exclusively. Japanese subtitles are okay.

Graded readers and beginner manga alongside a vocabulary sheet made by one of the communities, such as those on the wanikani beginner book list.

Ojisama to neko and yotsuba are exactly where you should be unless you’re further along than the books.

Picked up a new yotsuba 1 and 2 for 9 dollars each the other day for my kid. Maybe go for as much as 10-12 from most book stores and online sources.

  5. SHINKANSEN DONT LISTEN TO THESE HEATHENS!!! DOWNLOAD THE SKM N3 VOCAB KANJI AND GRAMMAR INTO AN ANKI DECK AND HAVE A FIELD DAY!!!!!

  6. I did Tobira after Genki 2, while I was halfway through Tobira I bought 完全マスター読解 and 文法 for N3.

  7. I tried Tobira, but thought it was pretty horrible. IMO, it’s disorganized and poorly formatted, and the example sentences are kind of wacky sometimes. You could try Quartet or the Try! series. I haven’t tried Quartet, but it’s probably good, from what I’ve heard. Try! is my personal favorite.

  8. The next one we did in my college courses was Tobira and after that it was non-textbook.
