Mold problem in apartment

I’ve posted about this a few months ago near the end of fall I think. But my apartment has a constant mold problem. I scrub anytime I see mold with bleach, or baking soda and water but it keeps coming back. I have a dehumidifier, I open my windows when I leave to let out moisture, and when I’m home, I have either a fan or the air cone on to keep airflow going. (Although now that it’s getting more humid I might stop opening the window?) I really don’t know what to do anymore. I have an electronic shelf that I don’t often go to and when I went to retrieve some thing yesterday, I realized the shelves and walls of it had mold. My guitar neck has mold. Even my こたつ and it’s cord are covered in mold.

Part of the problem I think is the fact that one entire wall is window, so the moisture just sticks to them, and lets a lot of sunlight in, and another is the fact that I have to dry my clothing inside, because I don’t have a balcony. Both of these are unavoidable though, so I really don’t know what to do.

Edit: any tips on how to clean electronics near mold? I have headphones, cords, an iron, and a flashlight that are probably “contaminated” with spores or something. Also the guitar neck. do I have to just strip all the strings off and wipe it down?

  1. Oh god the mold wars!! I feel you.

It’s very hard to know exactly the whys and wherefores of your situation, but you need a constant airflow. You need to move things away from the wall, and watch out for temperature differences that cause condensation. It sounds like yours has to be a daily battle. Wipe things down, don’t let dust accumulate.

  2. – UV lights kill some forms of mold
    – put white vinegar (in) or anti-mold liquid air cleanser (for) a little humidifier

    – カビキラー for household cleaner. my laptop briefcase kept attracting mold but after this it’s gone. open a window while cleaning then evacuate the area for awhile, this chemical gases you.
    god speed in mold eradication

  3. I mean once I clean my hoarder house I’m just gonna call my landlord to get the walls ripped out an replaced.

Don’t know what your walls are like but the way mine are it’s just behind them and there is no amount of wiping that’s gonna fix them

  4. me too! I had to throw away lots of clothes because they were too moldy. My bathroom, my kitchen… my house is a moldy nightmare.

  5. Dry in a coin laundry. Or did you check if your shower room has a laundry dryer function? You could also buy a mother load of those silicone canister things that they sell in 100 yen shops and put them everywhere.

  6. if the difference of the temp outside and inside of the house is more than 5degrees then condensation occurs.

  7. A purifier will help with mold spores & dust and the one I have has a clothes drying setting too

  8. If your shower/bath has a fan in it you could also run it around the clock. I read that this is sometimes common for japanese apartments trapped in the mold wars. You could also try drying your laundry there as well.

Otherwise I’d recommend wiping down the window wall whenever it’s wet and wringing it out in the sink. Also keep buying moisture traps and dehumidifiers and hope some change is noticed. Good luck!
