Ceramic tooth sealant: covered by insurance?

I tried looking this up elsewhere but all of the results were for ceramic crowns or fillings. I am thinking of getting ceramic sealant reapplied on my teeth in Japan. I did it in the US some years ago, and it’s about $50 a tooth in the US w/o insurance. But I’ve seen at least one provider in Japan that had slightly higher rates, 132000 for all crowns, but before insurance coverage. Their website says 0-30% for all dental expenses with national health insurance, but this is on their English page, while the Japanese page doesn’t mention which procedures are covered. I know some things aren’t covered like fillings. Anybody know if ceramic sealant/coatings are covered by insurance? I have company insurance, but I’m sure it’s the same as national regarding this niche procedure

  1. My husband is a dentist. He said ceramic sealant is not covered by insurance. He said he charges between ¥50,000 ~ ¥70,000 per tooth at his clinic here in Kyushu. He said if you’re in Tokyo expect to pay ¥100,000 or more per tooth.

  2. CADCAM which is a mixture of plastic and ceramic is covered by insurance. It’s not as good as full ceramic but at least it looks nicer than silver. It costs about 6000 yen.

  3. It’s not covered. I don’t know the coverage rules now but your dentist will. I paid 100K for ceramic years ago and then had a hybrid at one point which I think was covered and then gold at one time because it was cheaper believe it or not.

  4. Health insurance doesn’t cover things that are considered cosmetic when there is a cheaper option. Ceramic is considered something that is not necessary

  5. Wow, that’s kinda… As half-Japanese, me and my family always went to my other home country (Turkey) for dental or medical stuff. It was way cheaper and faster there. Mama got 20 full ceramic crowns on her teeth for like 20.000 TL. The dental office was in some city not in Istanbul, which made it even cheaper.

You should totally think about medical tourism to a country other than Japan.

  6. Looking at your other answers I suppose you mean resin. That is definitely covered by insurance as I just had it done to one of my teeth this week (abrasion due to teeth grinding… :()
I paid around 3,500 JPY for my whole visit (which included X-ray, cleaning and the medical treatment with resin). So I would think only the medical may run you about half of it or a little less?

  7. insurance covers the cad/cam crowns (it’s white). It goes for 4,5 and 6 tooth with some requirements. But it seems not very good quality. Ceramics only for your money.
