Travel insurance for a WHV

I’ve just been approved my Visa and looking to book my flight, and not sure what kind of travel insurance i should go for, i know i have to sign up to some sort of government health insurance within 14 days of arrival, but im not sure in terms of travel coverage for luggage etc.

I’ll probably only be moving around every few months so not sure what i should be going for, probably just a weeks worth of full travel insurance to cover all my bags and other personal belongings but im a bit lost on this

  1. Why do you need insurance for your luggage? Are you bringing something expensive?

If you have a credit card, most have some built-in insurance to cover your belongings in the case of damage on tickets purchased with that card. But otherwise, I don’t see the point in this.

  2. I never travel without it, ever, coz my rule is “if i can’t afford the insurance, i can’t afford to travel” (i consider it a basic responsibility, because, sure, having insurance for my luggage is nice but knowing if something happens mid-transit and i end up in hospital in a random country, or even if something unexpected happens and i die, the insurance covers all of that stuff so my family won’t suddenly get burdened with those costs.. no i’m not pessimistic, just realistic >.> these things DO happen, we know of some to whom it’s happened !! )

anyway so i purchased travel insurance when i went on my WHV (but then the pandemic stuffed up, i stayed longer than expected, the insurance ran out and i couldn’t get it extended long enough).

But I applied for that in my own home country, had to shop around to find out who actually had a decent price to cover the time i’d spend overseas. tried like four different providers and picked the best one (which means, cheapest BUT still covered everything i felt was most necessary).
Once in Japan, I was also paying the national health insurance, but due to the WHV weekly cap on work hours, I didn’t earn enough to be charged any higher than the 2000yen a month cost.. that way i had both home-country travel insurance(kinda costly one-off expense) and the compulsary national health insurance(cheap monthly cost).

  3. Also applying for a WHV next Monday hopefully (wish me luck). My current travel insurance covers only initial stay so I was searching for a full 12-month cover. HeyMondo haa got Long Stays insurance packages: https://heymondo.com/long-stay-travel-insurance/

Btw, did you have to complete the Certificate for Competion of Registration for ERFS system? I’m very worried about it as it looks like a new requirement due to covid and it involves some some of inviting organization which I don’t have

  4. I’m not very savvy with insurance and stuff so I might be giving bad advice, but maybe checkout Revolut. I got a ‘Metal’ subscription with them for their card, atm and exchange rates, but it turns out they give you a load of insurance coverage for varying things with it too. I believe my travel includes covid cancellations as well. Just something to look into!

I did checkout the UK post office myself and their yearly coverage was like £850 without covid.
