N5/N4 Semi-passive resources

Hello!

I have quite a hectic schedule, so I’m trying to think outside the box and combine some of my exercise time with learning Japanese (I do stretches, light weights and some cardio in a ghetto ‘home gym’).

So far I’ve tried some youtube videos on grammar/vocab, as well as some very light immersion with some live Japanese TV channels, oh and a couple of audio only podcasts.

What I’m finding is, the more complicated things where I need to think a bit more are a little too difficult to be useful when half concentrating.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for how I can make the use of this time, given that i can’t 100% focus on it.

Would it be a good candidate to just throw some J-Drama on without subtitles and see what sticks?

  1. The Nihongo con Teppei podcast.

Each episode is like 3-5 minutes, the language is very simple, and he deliberately repeats himself a lot. Also I personally find audio-only stuff to be better when I can’t pay 100% attention, because you’re not expected to also be absorbing a visual component.

  2. Material that you’re already familiar with can help. Maybe an anime/j-drama you’ve already watched with english subtitles before. Turn them off (or flip to japanese subtitles). Youll already be familiar with the plot so you can fill in the gaps/tune in & out depending on your exercise intensity without interrupting enjoyment/understanding too much.

  3. Even anime with English subtitles can be exposure to the language if you’re motivated to try to actively listen as you read. I wouldn’t call it language study exactly but it’s something more you can do when you’ve done all the studying you can handle for the day.

Or if you have even less focus available, turn on a Japanese streamer/vtuber in the background.
