Is talking about yourself cringe in a motivation letter for university?

I just found out that talking about oneself is considered bad manners. To what extent does this apply to motivation letters? I wrote a motivation letter containing 40% factual academic records, 20% about my own perspective and past experiences, and 40% about how the university matches my goals and why I hopefully would be a good candidate for them. It was a little cringy without even talking about myself, but I had to include it to reach the minimum word count of 450 words.

  1. Absolute statements are never correct 😉

Time, place, occasion. 自己pr is a thing, and applications like this are the appropriate place to talk about yourself (the bits that are relevant to the application, like why you want to go to uni in Japan)
