Design / CAD jobs as a route in (limited Japanese)

Hi All,
So I’m hoping for any advice or insight here. I’m a qualified product designer with a number of years experience and I’ve been trying to find out if I could take this career to Japan (without n1 or n2 level). I’m learning the language but it’s slow going!

Does anyone have experience doing this or something similar?

  2. In theory yes you *could* get a job.

In practice, why would someplace want to hire you over a Japanese person (or a Vietnamese person or a Chinese person) who does the same thing and also speaks Japanese and probably passable to good English, and who already lives there or even if they don’t aren’t as likely to have difficulty transitioning, and perhaps most importantly would be happy working at lower pay.

Note this isn’t entirely rhetorical; if you do have some specific specialty or experience relevant to a company you could have a better shot.

In the end the limiter is getting a job in the first place; apply to some and see if you get any interest. You only need to get lucky once to get in the door. Note this is assuming you have a uni degree or 10 years’ experience (technically can be as low as 3 but that’s situational) to qualify for a visa in the first place.
