Is Vocational School effective in Japan?

Hello guys, I am foreigner living in japan. Currently, I am just working part-time job but I want to work a full time job which sponsors work visa too. I want to work in tech industry but I don’t have a college degree only have online certificates from Udemy. My question is Can I get a good job if I join Vocation school and how effective is it’s certificate compared to university degree??

  1. What visa class are you currently on?

My understanding is that you can get a job after completing vocational school but it will be limited to the field you get certification in so jumping to tech won’t be possible. It will also IIRC be tied to your employer so changing jobs and keeping your visa becomes much more difficult.

If you want to go into tech maybe a better path is to just bite the bullet and get a 4 years degree in it rather than spending 2 years getting a certification for a job you don’t want that will severely limit your mobility.

  2. If a vocational school is a 2-year senmon gakkou(専門学校) then yes you can get a Visa. A lot of these schools sole goal is to get students a Job and that includes international students. The quality of education will be crap but for sure you’ll get a Job at some company doing IT. I knew people that graduated my school who didn’t know how to code the simplest things and they still got jobs. Also a senmon gakko degree is enough to sponsor a Visa. I’ve met people who graduated senmon gakko and got 5 years visa as well.

For IT there’s a lot of interlapping disciplines(情報処理、ゲーム開発など) so I wouldn’t worry about the specifics of the senmon gakko as long as there’s programming involved.

Additionally, while you are a student you can start doing part-time jobs coding(The school should be able to help you with this, or you can search them yourself) so by the time you start doing 就活 you can have something to show which will make it a lot easier to get a Job.

    Good Luck!

  3. I came to Japan after high school, went to a language school(2 years) and then vocational school(2 years). Now I’m working in IT. So yeah, you definitely can. Takes time.

    Good luck.
