I’m currently waiting to go back to uni for a post-grad in September and was wondering how realistic the possibility of getting some temporary work in Japan for the next 5 or so months is. Does anyone have any experience with this?
I think it would theoretically only be possible through a WHV if your nationality corresponds to one of the eligible countries, but I don’t know whether WHVs are being allowed in now. My guess is no.

Broadly speaking: Not realistic at all.
No company is going to sponsor a working visa for an employee that is only going to be in the country for 5 months.
If you’re from a country that is eligible for a Working Holiday Visa, you *might* be able to get a company to sponsor your ERFS certificate. But even that isn’t particularly likely for a <6 month stay.
