J-Drama / Anime Recommendations for Regional Dialects?

I recently have been watching Ryomaden (A Taiga drama about Sakamoto Ryoma), and it was really heavy in regional dialects like Tosaben, Satsumaben, Kyotoben etc. I was wondering if there are other anime or J-drama that are also heavy in a certain dialect? I understand these dialects (especially in period dramas) might not be exactly accurate to what people use today, but I just think it’s really interesting and would like to learn more in general.

  1. [Barakamon](https://myanimelist.net/anime/22789/Barakamon) has a lot of Gotõ dialect. the main character speaks in standard Japanese, but the other main characters do not. There are some secondary characters that speak to the main character in standard, but they barely show up.

Also, if you want some general exposure, Detective Conan features a variety of dialects depending on what part of the country the characters happen to be in during any given episode. For the most part it’s standard and Kansai dialect, but sometimes they’ll feature something else for an episode or two.

  2. The entire cast of Lovely Complex uses a heavy Kansai dialect, which makes it a pretty fun watch.

  3. Most dialects you will find in popular fictional media are “fake,” in that they’ve been watered down to be easily comprehensible to speakers of Standard Japanese. Even native Kansai-ben speakers are made to speak “エセ関西弁” for media.

  4. The Ice Guy And His Cool Female Colleague – The MC and his little sister speak in a lot of Kansai-ben.

  5. Summertime Render uses a Kansai dialect from what I’ve read. Great show too

  6. Arata from Chihayafuru speak in Fukui-ben. Also a really good anime, so give it a go.
