Book recommendations

I’ll be in Japan later this year and want to pad my Japanese library a little bit while I’m there (hooray for Japan Post’s printed matter shipping rates).

I already have an idea of some of what I want to buy (manga – Touch, Slam Dunk, One Piece, graded readers – ikki ni yomeru, novels – Murakami, light novels – honzuki, danmachi) but I’m looking for additional recommendations, particularly around novels and reference books (I already have the amazing Dictionary of Japanese Grammar and a full set of Shin Kanzen Master N2, which is the level in currently building towards).

What else would you recommend?

  1. Go to some some used book stores for some great bargains on magazines, books, manga, music, music, movies, games, etc. The last two may be region locked so do your research.

There usually are not many books for learners of Japanese. But you may find lots of children’s books, dictionaries, encyclopedias.

For new books, there are a few huge bookstores in Shinjuku, but frankly there are a lot of places to find books for Japanese learners.

  2. I heard you can buy 電子辞書 used and cheap

it would be cool to have a pre-internet one for when the internet goes out so you can still study

never been to Japan so IDK, but my tutor told me you can still find them

  3. Get the novels by **Tomihiko Morimi** (森見 登美彦) They’re great and are set in Kyoto.
