Preferential immigration points and finding work.

I’m looking to move to Japan for the right opportunity but it’s pretty difficult to find work there when you’re not in the country.

I lived in Japan for 5 years as a MEXT scholar(degree in architecture) but then left in 2016. Moved back home to India, got an MBA and currently work as an IT consultant(I have a bachelor’s in computers as well that I got from a university in India before moving to Japan thru the scholarship).

I was going through the preferential immigration points calculator and realized I can make the 70 points under advanced business management activities but I don’t see myself managing an organization given my experience. Best I could do is get hired in a consulting firm like the big4. I’d like to know if anyone has taken this route to immigrate to Japan and what their experience has been.

I don’t want to quit my job in India until I have a job offer from a firm in Japan. Can I get a visa through the preferential immigration system? Or do I still need a company to sponsor it?

I believe you’d still need an employer to sponsor the visa, and the visa once issued would only be valid for 3 months. The status of residence that you get upon arrival would be valid for 5 years though.

So I’d say don’t apply until you have concrete plans to move.

It’s really ***not***, though. Especially if you’re in tech, which you are.

Are you referring to the points for the Highly Skilled Foreign Professional visa?

If so: That visa is tied to an employer. You would need to get a job *before* you can get this visa. You can’t just get the visa and *then* go job hunting.

    >Can I get a visa through the preferential immigration system but still stay back in my country and apply for work?

Every working visa in Japan requires you to find a job before moving. It’s one of the basic tenets of the system.

You’re putting the cart before the horse here. Focus less on getting a visa and more on getting a *job*.
