For a student visa’s financial requirements, can I use the combined total of multiple bank accounts, and/or a non-Japanese bank account?

So I currently live in Japan on a Humanities visa but I’m switching to a student visa (and this sub is usually the most knowledgeable about visa stuff, so I thought this question would fit). I didn’t quite have the 1.5m JPY in my account here, so I went to wire what I needed from my US bank. Couldn’t do it online, had my dad go in with the information… and he didn’t fill it out correctly. So my money is currently in limbo, presumably on its way back to the US after a few more days or weeks. Unfortunately, I have to provide proof of my financials soon enough that it’s unreasonable to expect the failed transfer to resolve AND get a correct transfer through. (I’m still planning on making that transfer eventually because I will need it, and it is my money, but timeline-wise I’ve gotten kind of screwed).

So… I was assuming I was just going to show my bank book once it was updated after the transfer, but that’s not really an option now, and my money is split between my U.S. account and my Japan accounts (a JP Post account I use for daily stuff and a 82 account I use for rent).

Immigration specifically requested the bank book copy, but I was wondering if it’s possible to show more than one account, especially if I can combine my Japanese account and my American account. Does immigration accept bank statements from foreign banks? Is there any extra stuff I’d need to provide? I’m planning on going to the immigration office in person so I can explain, instead of just mailing it in or something.

  1. Have you tried calling your bank directly? (Can be costly to do so I know but they sometimes have international numbers) Perhaps having a banker on the line with all of your information can push the transfer forward? You could maybe print something showing your US bank balance before the transfer (a statement with the dates) I know someone from my country (UK) who did this in Osaka and he had no issues with his visa transfer (I think he provided a lot of documents) I would double check if this is ok!

  2. When I was applying for my year abroad, I showed two different account statements to show the funds I had and that was fine. I can’t be 100% certain, but if that was fine, it should be fine for you. Only way to really know is to ask if that is fine.
