Is photographs taken at tourist spots must be purchased?

In many popular tourist spots in Japan, after getting into a tourist attraction the hosts take photos of you and tries to sell the photos, either in printed or in digital form.
So far I’ve faced it twice. It felt very awkward to tell them that I don’t want the photo to be captured or I don’t want to pay for the photo after they print it. What should be the correct response in this situation? Should I just ignore that they have a printed photo of me hanging on their board?

  1. They are commonly offered in some places, but you are under no obligation to buy them. Just tell them it looks very nice but you aren’t interested. They’re used to it.

  2. Most people don’t buy them so don’t worry about it. Some places give you a mini version for free, that’s nice
