Getting a visa for a China visit in the North

I hope this is okay for this subreddit, people here really seem to know their stuff so I hope you don’t mind if I ask quite a dull question in the hope someone can enlighten me.

I live about an hour or so outside of Aomori. A mate is getting married in China in August and I’d love to attend the wedding. I’m a UK passport holder so would need a tourist visa. Has anyone visited China relatively recently who is aware of whether I’ll have to head down south to an embassy at some point or whether anywhere up North provides the same service? I don’t mind jumping on the Shinkansen but if anywhere within a stone’s throw of Aomori prefecture does the same thing it’d save a right chore.

Thanks in advance, sorry it’s not an exciting topic (like the guy who got fired for winking at people)

  1. Assuming you need to apply for a tourist visa, just Google for the nearest Chinese consulate. Maybe there’s one in Sapporo or Aomori. They should have information on the official website. You can email them if you have any questions.

This is information that you should only get from official sources.

  2. I believe you need to visit the visa centre in person to submit the documents and applications. They have locations in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. You can have your passport posted back to you though and there’s different types of services (rushed, etc) to choose from. But the initial application has to be in person.

  3. How long is the wedding? “Visa-free transit” can also be an option; all they check for is that your departing ticket is to a different country than you arrived from, and your “stopover” can be up to 6 days as long as it’s in one of the transit-allowed regions.
