What’s the pay like for modeling? (foreigners)

Hi y’all,

I’m currently signed with one management in Chicago. It is not my full time job and I work a very flexible remote job when I don’t have jobs. Recently my agent has been talking about me going to Tokyo for a few months (6 maybe more depending on how it goes) and working there (with another agency). I would stay in a model apartment during my time there. It sounds interesting but how is the market over there, is there more work then Chicago? The pay here is good when I do commercial work but high fashion has never paid well, is it the same there

Info about me

  2. Put simply, don’t come to Japan for the money. Come for the experience if you are interested in that.

If you come to Japan on an entertainment visa for modeling you’d need to get permission from immigration to engage in activities outside the scope of your status of residence in order to work this other job. You’d also then owe taxes to Japan on the income from this job, even if the money never enters Japan.

Over a decade ago a friend of mine came over as a 6 month loan between his agency in Toronto and an agency here. He was at shoots nearly everyday for those 6 months. No idea what he was getting paid though.
