Kanji and vocab

I’ve seen post around here talking about Kanji and vocab like it’s different from each other. Is it? I always thought it was one and the same.

  1. Can I introduce you to the daily thread?

(No they aren’t the same. Kanji are characters, not necessarily words)

  2. Kanji is a character, kind of a letter you could say and a vocabulary is a word. Kanji can be a word alone (like 元/もと) but also with other kanjis (元気/げんき), where the pronunciation might be different.
I’ve seen a comparision with kanji and English: although “see/look” and “vision” have a connected meaning, the pronunciation isn’t the same.

  3. Vocab: 食べる (to eat)

    Kanji: 食

No, it’s not the same. The loose meaning/association an isolated kanji may have is not “vocab”. Vocab are actual full words that may be made of a single kanji, several kanji, hiragana, katakana or a combination of the 3.

Also, the sticky for simple daily questions is there for posts like this one.
