Can I travel in Europe while I apply for my work visa?

I recently got a job in Tokyo, and they will start the visa application process soon (I live in the US). On my end, I have no idea what I will need to do. Could someone help me understand what I will need to do on my end and if it will be feasible or not to travel for the next couple of months while I wait for my visa to get approved by the Japanese government?

Do I need to be in the US while I am waiting? Or is there a simple drop-off of documents then I just have to wait?

  1. You bring the documents your company gives you to the immigration and then wait for them to send you a postcard informing you you can pick up your new residence card. You can travel, just remember there’s a limit for when you can pick up your new residence card (I don’t remember how long it was, but let’s just say two weeks) so you have to pick it up then. Other than that there’s not much else to do.
