Will I still be able to renew my work visa if I have a part-time contract?

Right now, I was hired as a part-time web developer (living in inaka) 2 months ago (March 10). Before that, I was a seishain but the workplace was toxic so I resigned, I was unemployed for 2 months (Jan-Feb) before landing my current job. My current salary is low so I built and updated my LI looking for a new job. I saw a job post that I’m quite interested in but it says that

“Job type: part-time contract

There is no full-time employee appointment system.(this position is described as “part-time contract” but 8 hours x 5 days working is required)”

It has health insurance though. And the salary is higher than what I’m making now. My concern is I have to renew my work visa next year would this be a problem if I apply for a part-time contract and not a seishain? What difference does it make? or should I just keep applying in LI for a seishain job?

Generally this isn’t an issue (and it doesn’t even sound like this is a part time contract… more like the company is mistranslating fixed-term contract as part-time.)

The only thing that really matters is that it is a legit job and that they are paying you enough to meet immigration requirements. Neither of those are particularly large hurdles.

  2. Noone cares how many hours you work. Just that you are working within your visa and earning enough to survive on.

  3. If your current assignment still falls under the duties of the previous work visa then I believe you are safe. However, if your assignments are different work then you need to notify the government within a set period of time that your visa no longer applies to your current status (you’re doing something other than what your original visa was for ex: instructor > different work domain).

If that part is okay, then the only other thing to worry about would be what happens when you renew your work visa. When you renew your visa you must have a sponsor, unless you fit into the new special categories for foreigners with special skills (highly unlikely). From what I’ve seen most part-time positions do not offer visa sponsorship, but depending on the company they may be willing to sponsor it, so you’d need to talk to your HR/manager about it. If they will not sponsor it then you need to find a new sponsor quick or when your visa is up… well.. so is your legal status in the country.

I think this should cover most of the basics.
