How to use new tabs to study vocab!

Hello all! Since so many of us use anki and wanikani, I just thought I’d let you guys know of some ways I’ve used a browser extensions to help myself get through my reviews. I appreciate that many people aren’t going to be able to do this at their jobs, but if you are then you will be amazed at how much you can get done if you occasionally do a few flash cards when you open up new tabs in your browser.

So the way that I have set up flash cards for when I open up new tabs is this.. I’ve used an extension that let’s me specify a web address to go to when I open up a new tab. The extensions name (for chrome) is.. “Custom New Tab URL”. So if you install that, then you can specify the URL to either wanikani’s review’s or to ankiweb’s study pages. 😀 You need to be logged in to wanikani or ankiuser for this to work, but once you are it should just load up flash cards that are due. Below are the url’s for the study pages..

And that’s all you need to do! I recommend only have one “new tab page” open at a time so you don’t end up with mutliple set’s of review questions to do..

In the future I plan to see if I can make an extension that alternates between wanikani and anki on each new tab open and then, after the reviews have finished for that service, only display the one that needs the attention.. but for now I’m just going in around lunch time (or when I’m done with the first service) and switching it to the next manually.

Happy studying all!

*Wanikani doesn’t work as well this way because it expects you to get both meaning of a character and vice versa for it to count as a finished review. I’m still leaving it here because I still found it useful, but on key works better for this.
