Two of the perhaps oddball recommendations that I mention for new learners is to aim in the long term to be able to think in one’s target language, and to be able to use a dictionary solely in one’s target language. So for Japanese, J2J, obviously. To that end for that second thought, I wonder if there’s a vocabulary and grammar list specific for dictionary usage. That is, the most common vocab and patterns used in J2J entries, obviously words for the parts of speech and conjugation 動詞・助詞・形容 but probably a bunch of others like 話題・対象・強調 etc. Lots of unknown unknowns, so I would be curious to see a serious treatment of the subject matter. Has anyone seen a vocab/guide for most common vocab and grammar usage in J2J dictionaries? I haven’t seen one, and now I’m tempted to rip apart a J2J dictionary entry text dump with some python and see what patterns I find.

I don’t think it would be that hard to compile. You’d basically just get a few dicts and pull out all the common terms.

I think if you look at the 凡例 section for the dictionary in question, particularly the last section that has abbreviations used, it should give you all you need.
