Apologies if this is the wrong place.
I was born in Japan and am half Japanese.
I did have a Japanese passport before but my mother did not bother to renew it and has expired since I was around 16 years old. I am now 29 and was wondering if I could renew it…?
I do understand that Japan does not technically allow dual citizenship but I know a few hafus that hold both Japanese and British passports.
Many thanks 🙏

That’s gonna be tricky. The whole getting around the dual nationally thing relies on you renewing your Japanese passport and just denying you have any other passports. If you only have your UK passport they’ll question where you’ve been up until now and how you’ve been living there.
I’ll just share it really helps if you have your old passport or even a photocopy of it. I used an old photocopy of my passport and filed a police report for a lost passport to get mine renewed (have to have the police report).
Yes. My wife renews her passport in the UK.
It is a bit of a pain though. They won’t send it by post so you need to go to either the Japanese embassy in London or the Consulate General in Edinburgh.
Edit: If you have a UK passport though, that could complicate things. I’d contact the embassy or consulate general to make sure.
Don’t mention you have a UK passport.
In your case, you need to get your family file thing from the register where your family comes from in Japan.
If you keep on renewing your passport, this is not needed.
That is what the embassy exists for
