How to pay debts from overseas???

Hi! I left Japan in 2016 and I left some debts. The biggest one – residental tax (80,000yen). I’d like to go back for study, but I am afraid they won’t give me visa. Does anybody know how to pay it from outside Japan?

  1. I don’t think people should downvote you if you want to pay your back debt (aside from people being angry you didn’t pay). Better late than never.

Someone is free to correct me, but I would say you would have to hire a person in Japan to go to your city hall and request to pay your back taxes. Of course, they will likely have a pile of paperwork to even allow them to pay, so you should probably contact a Japanese lawyer or accountant as they would likely know what documents they would need from you to authorize them to deal with city hall to pay your taxes. As for pension, same as above except may be more complicated as it is national debt rather than a municipal one.

Having said that, the My Number Japan card was introduced around 2015 so you should probably make sure those are paid up as I assume it was probably linked to that if you did get that. I would pay the debts before applying again. If it was pre-2015, then I assume (unless the city hall forwarded the debt information to immigration) it probably remains there.
