Any alternative to Japanese health insurance???

Simple question.
If you’re not enrolled in the shakaihoken or the kokuminhoken, are there any other alternatives for health insurance in Japan? Like private insurance?

If one don’t want to work full time, but just a part time job, just to get by and enjoy life, I believe the kokuminhoken would be rather pricey! So any other options????

Thanks for the help in advance

  1. Either shakaihoken or kokuminhoken are obligatory, so you don’t have a choice. You can get partial fee exemptions depending on your income though.

  2. I was able to opt out of national health insurance and use BUPA in place back in the day (up until 2011). Coverage was cheaper than national insurance, and reimbursed 100% of costs. However to get reimbursed by BUPA, you needed to get a shindansho which cost like ¥3,000-¥5,000 each, so we would just get reimbursed for more expensive stuff.
