Is one year reasonable time to be ready for AP Japanese test?

I am currently on chapter 4 of genki and have been doing japanese class in high school for this year and last year. Would doing Genki 1 and 2 and then keep going with actual japanese content and more learning be enough to pass in a year? I don’t care about getting a 5 and I want to learn japanese anyway so I won’t just do this for the AP Exam. Also any tips specifically for the AP Japanese Exam?

  1. It usually takes 4 years of high school to get that far. One year might be pushing it, unless you’re supplementing a LOT.

The AP exam is supposed to be very difficult, especially if you don’t have a good grasp of the culture. Some things which may pop up that you might gloss over would be holidays, school rules and traditional arts.

On the test there’s a multiple choice and written and spoken responses. For example, you might participate in a virtual text message exchange or phone call. You definitely don’t want to skip on either.

  2. Somewhat. Genki 1+2 can be finished in under 6 months if you average 1 lesson per week here on out and then from there you can continue to mine vocab as well as studying up material specifically for the AP test. The only concern is that I believe speaking and writing are on the test which will be more difficult to self prepare for.

  3. Probably if you study harder than you’ve ever studied in your life and are fine with just a minimal pass. The hard part is that unlike the JLPT, for the AP exam, you do need to be able to speak, compose short and long form typed responses in Japanese, and know/talk at length about various cultural topics which will require significant additional practice and effort on your end.
