How realistic is the whole “switch jobs on an easy-to-get-eikaiwa visa when you get here” argument?

Bit of a background: I worked as an ALT in Japan for 3.5 years. I’ve been back in the States for five and have since gained experience in IT, office administration, and data entry. My Japanese ability is N2 level which I’ve maintained by reading the news, etc…

I know that a lot of people have told others to “come over via an eikaiwa job and switch once you get here,” but I’m wondering what the logistics of that actually is? Like, how long before you start looking for jobs in other fields?

Personal questions I’ve been asking myself: do I want to work at AEON/NOVA for at least a year? I assume I would have to work said job for at least six months before switching or even looking for a new job. And I’m not against doing that, but I also want to make sure I have some idea of what my plan is going to be once I get there.

I don’t care about a salary hit. I don’t care about a temporary career hit. I lived on 250,000 yen/mo just fine over there and I can do it again.

I’m just curious if there is anyone here who has actually managed to pull this off and what your experience was?

Thanks in advance!
